+250 million children around the world will not reach their cognitive milestones by the age of five. In LMICs, 53% of children cannot understand a simple story by the end of primary school. 750 million youth & adults cannot read and write, excluding them from participation in communities and societies. Multiple factors contribute to this crisis but lack of access to high-quality textbooks and supplementary reading materials in local languages are key elements behind this global learning crisis.
Worldreader puts a rich library of culturally-relevant digital books directly in the hands of readers and partners. Mobile technology can provide quality digital books in places where physical books have failed to reach and influence reading behaviours in places struggling to promote a reading culture. Worldreader digital reading solutions capture real-time reading data providing metrics and data dashboards which enable powerful insights through the analysis of user engagement and content usage.
Worldreader helps children and youth improve their reading skills and expand their reading habits, the building blocks of learning. Worldreader supports parents, caregivers and pre-primary teachers to engage in regular reading, storytelling and story-play activities. Primary age children benefit with reading comprehension and fluency, while adolescents and youth foster their 21st-century skills. Educational partners benefit from programme support and data insights across East & West Africa, MENA, South Asia and Latin America.
Mission and Vision
Readers build a better world. Worldreader works globally with partners to support vulnerable and underserved communities with digital reading solutions that help improve learning outcomes, workforce readiness, and gender equity. Digital reading has the power to reach millions and support the global community in accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Worldreader’s digital reading solutions, built on human-centered design principles, offer a scalable cost-effective way of addressing the growing learning crisis. Worldreader solutions are designed to ensure universal compatibility and function on any data-enabled feature phone, smartphone or tablet, and can be accessed as web or Android apps, allowing offline reading and using up to 90% less data than a traditional app. The locally and culturally-relevant library increases the reading of children and families, as people engage best with books that reflect their lives and identities. In-app messages and campaigns encourage reading behaviours and habit formation. Worldreader’s backend systems generate evidence on reading behaviours that physical books cannot. Using large data models, Worldreader monitors time spent reading, titles read, and supports deeper periods of reading. The low-cost and flexible subscription-based models for partners make solutions highly competitive at scale.
Planned Goals and Milestones
Upcoming features will include individual tracking and learning plans for teacher and parental engagement, along with new language collections, enhanced data-analysis, in-app formative reading assessment tools and accessibility features, such as text to speech. With a partnership-first approach, Worldreader aspires to impact 25 million readers and distribute more than 100 million books by 2025, with rapid expansion across current geographies and in fragile, conflict and crisis settings.
