Innovation: Africa’s water projects are solar-powered water supply systems that pump water from a borehole to a raised 10,000-liter tank. The borehole is drilled to the aquifer and tested to ensure that it can provide sufficient water yield for the community and is safe for human consumption. After the water reaches the tank, pipes channel water to multiple water points in the village. Given the large populations in the communities we serve, the number of water points is typically 10-15 water points in a radius of 4-6 kilometers of the village. Once a prospective water project is approved and sponsored, iA assists the community to elect committee members who manage and monitor all stages of the water project during and after construction. Our team strongly encourages women to join and lead these committees since they traditionally bear the responsibility of collecting water for the entire household. After the water committee is elected, iA provides them with ongoing training about the water system to equip them with the tools and knowledge they need to maintain and take ownership of the project when construction is complete. To further ensure the sustainability of the project, iA’s community-based model requires the committee to collect monthly contributions from the community to cover future maintenance costs that may arise.

Solution

Innovation: Africa has developed a solar water pumping system with a remote monitoring unit to provide safe, clean water to rural Africa villages. The UN-awarded off-grid remote monitoring unit enables the team and donors to monitor the water flow output at every water project, at any time. Data is collected by monitoring devices and sent hourly via cellular communication technology to a custom-built database. Should an issue occur, our local team of engineers will be able to address the issue.
